Create your own world

“I really love your approach to life and people.  Imagine what the world would be like if everybody treated everybody that way?”

“I imagine that all of the time.  But I also know if we act like that and are attracted to others who do, then we begin to make that world for ourselves.”

This was a recent conversation with my boss.

I love my boss.  He is my boss, but also a friend, and I have learned a tremendous amount from.  From my first interaction with him, I have been amazed at his insight into people and his way of dealing with people.

“…But I also know if we act like that and are attracted to others who do, then we begin to make that world for ourselves.”

Wow.  Those words really struck me.  We can create our own world by being positive, treating people with kindness and spending time with people who think positive and treat people with kindness.

I have thought a lot about life and relationships over the course of this past year. I used to be of the mind that if you are friends with somebody, you should fight for the friendship regardless of how they treat you.  I mean, that’s what friends do, right?    But this year, I have questioned this – is it worth investing time in friendships with people who discourage you from following your dreams, or are jealous of some silly characteristic or other friendship… or is it really possible to position yourself with positive people?  People who are also living lives that align with their dreams and interests – even if those dreams and interests are different.

Nobody’s perfect.  We all have down days and react less than perfectly.  Love and acceptance is a huge part. Making mistakes, learning from them and getting back up.  And allowing others the same freedom.

Life is a journey, and there isn’t one right answer for every situation.  But there are principles.  And kindness is powerful.

  1. Thanks for the sweet mention, Naomi. I too am enjoying and benefiting from our relationship. One clarification- I am not your boss. We work together in serving the needs of our clients. The money comes from the clients, not from me. I am just steward of their marketing dollars.
