Go as far as you can see

Be 1% better today than yesterday!

“And then it happened, after 12 years of hard work, I was an overnight success” I read this in Jay Samit’s book, Disrupt yourself, and loved it.   Life is incremental.  Hard work adds up, and pays off. Little by little, the actions you take and choices you make build upon each other, to equip you with skill, character, strength, intelligence, mastery – but none of these attributes come instantly. One small choice builds upon a myriad of other choices… but it starts with one. Several months ago, I watched the movie, Wild. In it, the main character, Cheryl, was going to hike the Pacific trail from California to Oregon.   1,100 miles! It’s a long journey, and such a journey seems impossible when you start out. So, she afforded herself the luxury of quitting whenever she didn’t want to go any further. That mental loophole was all she needed to actually start. The first day of her journey, she looked at the journey ahead and thought to herself “I’ll just do one day”. And she …

Don't let your dreams just be dreams

How to make your dreams come true

Dream The first step is dream. Play with ideas. Explore interests. Read books. Meet new people. I love the quote that says ‘You will be the same person in five years as you are today, except for the people you meet and the books you read”. This resonates with me, as books and people open your mind and introduce you to new ideas and ways of life. Don’t be afraid to try new things. “You can’t achieve dreams you don’t have”  – Jay Samit  Start It sounds simple, perhaps a bit cliché, but – just do it! Just start! When you embark on a new journey or set your hand to a new venture, you are going to be a beginner. You can’t learn everything you need to know through books, people or training – you have to just start. Take the jump. The unknown can be scary, but it is the only real way to attain mastery.  Keep Going Or fail. Failing isn’t bad. “Failing is trying something that doesn’t work. Failure is giving …

flame of success

Success is how you run the race

I’m starting to realize success isn’t a destination.   For a long time I have equated success with achieving certain goals. Lately, I am realising success is a journey, moreso than a destination. Circumstances are second to attitude. We all face hard times. We all face setbacks. Success is the way we handle those setbacks. Do we let them hold us back? Do we choose to learn, even from our own failures? If we fall, and mess up, do we allow our failure to discourage us or do we take it as an opportunity to learn and grow and get back up? There are times when circumstances, people and maybe even our own minds, tell us we can’t do something.   The odds are against us. Yet, there is an inner flame that quietly flickers – “you can do it”. Success is choosing to feed that flame. Success when nobody believes in you I read an article about famous celebrities who were rejected. Walt Disney was fired from the Kansas City Star and told he “lacked imagination …

Mirror, Mirror

Life is all about perspective.  Who you are is the outcome of how you see yourself. There is a theory that says that we base our view of ourselves on the way other people view us. Though, I believe there is truth in that, I believe moreso that other people view us in light of the way we view ourselves. If a person is insecure, that will affect their actions, mannerisms and choices. This affects the way other people view that person. But it stems from that persons initial perspective.  In contrast, when a person is confident, this also comes out in their actions, and in the subtle ways in which they communicate.  I had an interesting conversation with my boss the other day. We were talking about an idea for a marketing angle, but it lead into a conversation on perspective – and how different people view the same thing differently. He said he would be interested in knowing how different people view me – my parents, my kids, my ex, my best friends.     …

To dreams! And to living lives that create them!

Dream and Pursue. I chose this name for my blog because I believe in dreaming, and following your dreams. People often think that means you have a big dream and follow it whole-heartedly. Though I agree with this in essence, I believe most fall into their dreams… little by little by living life. How can you know what you love to do if you haven’t done anything? As you live life, the pieces start to fall into place. I attended a conference by Pat Falvey, an adventurer, entrepreneur and motivational speaker. I wonder if he would have been able to have the foresight at 29 to see where he would be today; I wonder if he even thought to dream that big. Though already successful, he had overtraded and lost everything. He battled discouragement and depression, and a friend encouraged him to come hillwalking. He resisted, having no interest. Finally to make his friend leave him alone, he went… and fell in love. (With hillwalking – not the friend!) On that very first walk, a …
