When bad things happen to good people

Recently, a friend whom I admire greatly shared with me some heartbreaking circumstances that she is facing. Truly heartbreaking. This is one of the most beautiful people you could ever meet – why is she facing such hardship? She doesn’t deserve this. The unanswerable question: Why do bad things happen to good people? The same day, I read the following by Hal Elrod, “I’ve been lucky enough to hit rock bottom twice in my life. Not once, but twice.” Once, he was hit by a drunk driver, severely injured and nearly died. Another time, he was $450,000 in debt and battling depression. He wrote how both situations pushed him forward. The irony of hardship is that it forces you to re-evaluate your life. It drives you to become better. It takes either desperation or inspiration to change. Sometimes the hard times in our lives allow us to step back and see from a perspective we wouldn’t have otherwise. But, I’m convinced, it’s not circumstances that change us. It’s mindset. Sometimes the circumstances serve us to …

flame of success

Success is how you run the race

I’m starting to realize success isn’t a destination.   For a long time I have equated success with achieving certain goals. Lately, I am realising success is a journey, moreso than a destination. Circumstances are second to attitude. We all face hard times. We all face setbacks. Success is the way we handle those setbacks. Do we let them hold us back? There are times when circumstances, people and maybe even our own minds, tell us we can’t do something.   The odds are against us. Yet, there is an inner flame that quietly flickers – “you can do it”. Success is choosing to feed that flame. Success when nobody believes in you I read an article about famous celebrities who were rejected. Walt Disney was fired from the Kansas City Star and told he “lacked imagination …

Everything Happens For a Reason… Or Does It?

“Everything happens for a reason” Such simple, yet profound, encouraging (yet partially demotivating) words.  A phrase we have all heard.   Yet they stopped me in my tracks. My friend and I had been chatting about some recent happenings when she smiled her typical warm smile and said, “Everything happens for a reason.” I had always believed that.  But this particular day, it struck me – I don’t actually believe that anymore.   SOME THINGS HAPPEN FOR A REASON Without question, some things happen for a reason that we simply aren’t able to see at the time.  It isn’t until we are a little further down the road that we can see how the pieces all fit together.  Life ran it’s mystical course and brought good out of a dark or bleak situation. BUT ALL? What about rape?  What about abuse?  Neglect?  Innocent children kidnapped from loving homes to experience unimaginable horrors?   Premature deaths? These can all seem far removed if they don’t touch our lives personally.  So… what about betrayal?  Shattered dreams?  Broken …
